Safety signs that meet UK law

The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 require employers to display safety signs wherever a risk cannot be avoided or adequately controlled by other means. In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 also calls for clear signage on escape routes and firefighting equipment.

Our signs use the pictograms from BS EN ISO 7010, so each symbol carries the same meaning as it does on any other UK site. Your risk assessments are the place to start, and our starter packs cover the signs most workplaces need.

Self adhesive vinyl as standard

Every sign is printed on self adhesive vinyl: thin, flexible and quick to fit. Peel off the backing and apply it to any clean, dry, smooth surface, including walls, doors, glass, cabinets and machinery.

Vinyl is the most cost effective choice for indoor signage and is easy to replace when layouts change. If you need signs for outdoor or harsh environments, contact us and we will advise.

Buying safety signs for your workplace

CheapSafetySigns supplies more than 4,000 safety signs to UK businesses, schools, landlords and construction sites. Every sign is printed on self adhesive vinyl using the BS EN ISO 7010 pictograms, with prices shown including and excluding VAT, no minimum order, and bulk pricing and credit accounts on request. Choose a sign type below, or start with a starter pack for your premises.

Fire safety signs

Fire exit signs, fire action notices, fire door signs and fire equipment signs show people the way out and where to find extinguishers and alarm points. In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person for a building to make sure escape routes and firefighting equipment are clearly marked.

Warning signs

Yellow triangular signs with a black border warn of a hazard that cannot be removed, such as electricity, slippery floors, forklift trucks, hot surfaces or hazardous substances. Place them where people will see them before they reach the hazard.

Prohibition signs

A red circle with a diagonal bar means something is not allowed. No smoking, no entry, no mobile phones and no unauthorised access are among the most common, and no smoking signs are a legal requirement in enclosed workplaces.

Mandatory signs

Blue circular signs tell people what they must do, from wearing hard hats, hi-vis, ear defenders and eye protection to washing hands or keeping fire doors shut. They are the standard way to show PPE requirements on site and in the workplace.

First aid and safe condition signs

Green signs mark safety equipment and safe places: first aid kits, first aiders, eyewash stations, defibrillators, emergency showers and fire assembly points. Make sure everyone can find help quickly in an emergency.

Construction site signs

Site safety signs cover the hazards and rules found on building sites, from site entrance boards and PPE requirements to overhead work, deep excavations and authorised access only. Keep visitors and workers informed from the gate onwards.

Which signs does my business need?

The signs you need depend on the hazards identified in your risk assessments, including your fire risk assessment. As a starting point:

  • Offices: fire exit and fire door signs, fire action notices, first aid signs and no smoking signs.
  • Shops and retail: fire exits, staff only and no entry signs, wet floor warnings and CCTV signs.
  • Warehouses and factories: forklift and vehicle warnings, PPE mandatory signs, racking and electrical hazard signs.
  • Construction sites: site entrance boards, PPE signs, hazard warnings and authorised access only signs.
  • Kitchens: hand washing, hot surface and chemical warning signs, plus fire safety signs.

Not sure where to start? Ask our team and we will help you put together the right set.

Safety sign questions

Are safety signs a legal requirement?

Yes. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 require employers to provide safety signs wherever a significant risk remains that cannot be avoided or controlled by other means. Signs must be kept in good condition and explained to staff. Fire safety law also requires escape routes and firefighting equipment to be clearly signed.

What do the colours on safety signs mean?

Red means prohibition or fire equipment, yellow means warning, blue means a mandatory action and green means a safe condition such as an escape route or first aid point. The shape matters too: circles for prohibition and mandatory signs, triangles for warnings, and squares or rectangles for safe condition and fire equipment signs.

What is BS EN ISO 7010?

BS EN ISO 7010 is the international standard for safety sign symbols, adopted in the UK. Using its pictograms means a sign carries the same meaning wherever it is seen, which is why our signs use them wherever a standard symbol exists.

How quickly will my signs arrive?

Orders placed before 4pm on a working day are despatched the same day. Standard delivery takes 2 to 3 working days and is free on orders of £30 ex VAT (£36 inc VAT) or more. Next working day delivery is £9.54 inc VAT (£7.95 ex VAT) when you order by 2pm.

Do you offer bulk or trade discounts?

Yes. For larger quantities, regular orders or a credit account, call 01263 586302 or email orders@cheapsafetysigns.co.uk and we will quote. There is no minimum order, and we also quote for whole-building signage schedules.
