Assembly points
After an evacuation, everyone should gather at a known, safe assembly point away from the building so they can be accounted for. Fire assembly point signs use the BS EN ISO 7010 E007 symbol and should be clearly visible from the exits that lead to them. Your fire action notices should name the same assembly point.
Refuge points
Refuges are protected areas, usually in stairwells, where people who cannot use the stairs can wait for assistance during an evacuation. Approved Document B requires refuges in many multi-storey buildings. Refuge point signs mark the area and remind others to keep it clear.
Placement
- Assembly point signs at the gathering area, mounted high enough to see across a car park.
- Refuge signs at each refuge, alongside any emergency voice communication unit.
- Keep Clear signs where refuges might otherwise be used for storage.
