What prohibition signs mean
A red circle with a diagonal bar means an action is not allowed. Under the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, prohibition signs forbid behaviour likely to cause danger. The symbol is black on a white background, crossed through in red.
The most used prohibition signs
- No smoking signs, a legal requirement in enclosed workplaces.
- No entry and authorised personnel only signs.
- No mobile phones near fuel, sensitive equipment or in clean areas.
- Do not use lifts in the event of fire.
- No food or drink, no naked flames and no pedestrians.
Placement
Put prohibition signs at the point where the action would take place, such as entrances, doors and equipment, so the instruction is seen at the right moment.
