Fire safety signs and the law
In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person for a building accountable for fire safety, including clear signage. Escape routes and exits must be marked, firefighting equipment must be signed, and staff must know what to do if a fire breaks out. Scotland and Northern Ireland have equivalent legislation.
The signs most premises need
- Fire exit signs on every escape route and final exit.
- Fire action notices by alarm call points and exits.
- Fire door signs such as Fire Door Keep Shut on both faces of fire doors.
- Fire extinguisher signs above each extinguisher, showing its type and use.
Where to start
Your fire risk assessment should identify escape routes, final exits and equipment locations. Walk each route from the furthest point to the exit and check a sign is visible at every change of direction. If you are setting up new premises, our fire safety starter pack covers the essentials in one order.
