Why fire doors need signs
A fire door only works if it is closed when a fire starts. Fire door signs remind people not to wedge doors open, prop them with furniture or leave them unlocked when they should be secure. Approved Document B and BS 5499 call for fire doors to be signed, and fire risk assessors check for them.
Which sign goes where
- Fire Door Keep Shut: both sides of self closing fire doors.
- Fire Door Keep Locked: fire doors to cupboards, stores and risers that should stay locked.
- Automatic Fire Door Keep Clear: doors held open on hold-open devices that release when the alarm sounds.
- Fire Escape Keep Clear: exit doors and routes that must not be blocked.
Fitting your signs
Fix signs at eye level on the face of the door, on a clean, dry and smooth surface. Self adhesive vinyl conforms to most painted and laminated door finishes. Check fire door signs as part of your regular fire door inspections and replace any that are damaged or missing.
