First Aid Signs

First aid signs and the law

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate first aid equipment and facilities, and to tell employees about the arrangements. Signs are the simplest way to show where first aid equipment and trained first aiders can be found.

Which signs you need

• First aid box signs above or beside each first aid kit.
• First aider signs listing who is trained and how to contact them.
• Eyewash station and emergency shower signs where chemicals are handled.
• Defibrillator (AED) signs so the device can be found in seconds.
• First aid room signs and directional arrows to guide people there.

Placement

First aid signs are green squares or rectangles with a white cross, the safe condition format in BS EN ISO 7010. Place them where they can be seen from the main routes through your premises, and add directional signs where the equipment is out of sight.
