What mandatory signs mean
A blue circle with a white symbol means an action must be carried out. Under the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, mandatory signs are used to require specific behaviour, most commonly the use of personal protective equipment.
Common mandatory signs
- PPE signs: hard hats, safety boots, hi-vis, gloves, eye and ear protection.
- Wash your hands and hygiene signs.
- Fire door keep shut and keep locked.
- Use handrail, keep left and pedestrians use this route.
Placement
Put mandatory signs at the entrance to the area where the requirement applies, so people can comply before they go in. Where several items of PPE are needed, a multi-symbol sign keeps the message on one sign.
