Marking your escape routes
Fire exit signs show people the quickest safe way out of a building. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, emergency routes and exits must be indicated by signs. BS 5499-4 sets out how escape route signs should be placed so that, from any point on a route, the next sign or the exit itself is visible.
Choosing the right arrow
- Arrow up: go forward and through, or straight on from here.
- Arrow left or right: change direction at this point.
- Arrow down left or down right: go down the stairs in that direction.
- Arrow up left or up right: go forward and to the side, or up stairs.
- Fire exit with no arrow: above the final exit door itself.
Size and placement
Choose a size that can be read from the furthest point people will see it. Larger signs suit long corridors, warehouses and open-plan floors; smaller signs suit doors and short passages. Mount signs where they will not be hidden by doors, furniture or stored goods, and check them as part of your regular fire safety checks.
