About this sign

A square firefighter's switch sign, marking the switch that lets crews isolate high voltage signs or lighting, such as exterior neon or cold cathode installations. It tells responders where to find the cut off.

Fix next to the switch at a height reachable and visible from the access route. Position it on the outside of the building where it is meant to be found, and keep the area free of obstruction.

Which regulation requires it

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. In England and Wales the Order places duties on the "responsible person" for non-domestic premises, including a duty under Article 14 to keep emergency routes and exits clear and indicated. Scotland is covered by the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, and Northern Ireland by the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. Escape route signage is normally specified to BS 5499-4 alongside the ISO 7010 graphical symbols.

General guidance, not legal advice. Whether a given sign is required at your premises depends on your own risk assessment.
