About this sign

Indicates that smoking is permitted here. It marks the spot where people are allowed to smoke, so the rest of the site can stay smoke free.

Fix on the wall or post at the designated smoking spot, at eye level. Place a bin nearby and keep it away from entrances, ventilation intakes and flammable stores.

Which regulation requires it

Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. Employers must provide a safety sign where a significant risk cannot be avoided or controlled by other means, must keep signs maintained, and must make sure staff understand what an unfamiliar sign means and what to do about it. HSE guidance L64 sets out the detail. Signs are not a substitute for engineering controls or a safe system of work.

General guidance, not legal advice. Whether a given sign is required at your premises depends on your own risk assessment.
