About this sign

A portrait stairway sign reading "This staircase must be kept clear at all times". It prevents boxes, bags and bikes being left on stairs, where they could trip people or block a way out.

Fix it at eye level at the foot of the stairs and on each landing. Particularly useful in flats, shared offices and shops with upstairs stock areas.

Which regulation requires it

Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. Employers must provide a safety sign where a significant risk cannot be avoided or controlled by other means, must keep signs maintained, and must make sure staff understand what an unfamiliar sign means and what to do about it. HSE guidance L64 sets out the detail. Signs are not a substitute for engineering controls or a safe system of work.

General guidance, not legal advice. Whether a given sign is required at your premises depends on your own risk assessment.
