UK Safety Sign Suppliers Compared

Buying safety signs sounds simple until you start comparing suppliers. Some make their own signs, some resell, some only sell to the trade, and delivery thresholds, materials and despatch times vary widely. This guide explains how the UK safety sign market works, what to check before you order, and what 11 UK suppliers offer, so you can pick the one that suits your job.
How UK safety signs are regulated
In Great Britain, the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 require employers to provide safety signs where a significant risk remains after other controls are in place. The regulations set the meaning of sign colours and shapes: red for prohibition and firefighting equipment, yellow for warnings, blue for mandatory actions and green for safe conditions and escape routes. In practice, almost every supplier uses the symbols in BS EN ISO 7010, so a sign bought from one supplier means the same as a sign bought from another.
The regulations apply to employees, and good practice is to sign premises clearly for visitors too. In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 adds fire specific duties, such as marking escape routes and exits. Your risk assessments tell you which signs you need. A supplier cannot decide that for you, though a good one will help you check that you have covered the basics.
Who sells safety signs in the UK
The market has four broad types of seller:
- Specialist manufacturers selling online. They print signs in their own workshops, often in the UK, and sell direct to businesses and the public. They usually offer custom signs and bulk discounts.
- Trade only manufacturers. They supply distributors and resellers and do not sell to the public.
- Specialist resellers. They buy from manufacturers and sell a wide range online, sometimes with their own branded products.
- General workplace and building suppliers. Safety signs are part of a much larger catalogue that also includes tools, PPE and fixtures.
None of these is automatically better. A manufacturer can print a custom sign quickly. A reseller may stock a wider range. A general supplier is convenient if you are buying other equipment at the same time.
What to check before you order
- Symbols and standards. Standard signs should use ISO 7010 symbols. Photoluminescent (glow in the dark) escape route signs should state which performance standard they meet.
- Material. Self adhesive vinyl suits clean, smooth surfaces such as doors and walls. Rigid PVC suits screw fixing. Aluminium suits tougher or outdoor positions. Fluted plastic suits temporary signs. Check the supplier's advice on where each material works.
- Delivery threshold. Compare the free delivery threshold, and check whether it is before or after VAT.
- Despatch cut-off. If you need signs quickly, check the daily cut-off for same day despatch and whether it covers custom signs.
- Custom signs. Ask whether you get a proof before printing and how long it takes.
- Returns and guarantees. Check the returns window and any warranty on fading or cracking.
- Independent reviews. Read recent reviews on sites the supplier does not control.

Choosing the right size sign
A long standing rule of thumb in European safety sign guidance is that a sign's area in square metres should be at least the viewing distance in metres, squared, divided by 2000. It works up to about 50 metres. A sign read from 10 metres needs about 225 x 225 mm, and a sign read from 20 metres needs about 450 x 450 mm. Size for the longest line of sight, not the average one.
Frequently asked questions
Do safety signs have to use ISO 7010 symbols?
The 1996 regulations set the colours, shapes and meanings of safety signs, and in practice the symbols come from BS EN ISO 7010. Not every custom sign has to use an ISO pictogram, but where a sign does use a standard safety symbol, it should match the standard.
Is a manufacturer better than a reseller?
Not necessarily. A manufacturer can print custom signs quickly and control quality. A reseller may offer a wider range or lower prices on standard lines. Compare the product, the delivery terms and the returns policy rather than the label.
What should I check on a custom sign?
Ask for a proof before printing. Check the wording, the symbols, the sign type, the size and the material. A good supplier will tell you if your wording needs a different sign type to meet the regulations.
Which material should I choose?
Match the material to the surface and the setting. Self adhesive vinyl suits smooth, clean surfaces indoors. Rigid PVC suits screw fixing, and aluminium suits tougher or outdoor positions. Photoluminescent signs suit escape routes, where the sign needs to stay visible if the lights fail.
How often should I replace safety signs?
Include signs in your regular safety checks. Replace any that are faded, damaged or hidden, and update them when the hazard, the layout or the procedure changes.
Where to start
If you need to cover a new premises, start with fire exit signs, fire assembly point signs and the core safety signs for your hazards, then add toilet signs and CCTV signs as needed. If you cannot find what you need, our custom safety signs service sets out your wording and sends a proof before printing. See our delivery information for our own terms.
